MONTREAL - Entertainer Céline Dion and her husband René Angélil have listed their Montreal-area mansion for nearly $29.7 million, making the private island estate the most expensive residential property up for sale in Quebec.

The couple is apparently selling the 24,000 square foot French Normand-style château - secluded on its own 830,000 square foot fenced-in island near Laval’s Ste. Rose district - in an effort to downsize.

“It took them a long time to make this decision,” Ross McCredie, CEO of Sotheby’s International Canada, told the National Post. “It was a passionate thing for them to make. And in the end, they just haven’t been using it enough … They plan to purchase another home in Montreal that’s much smaller.”

The three-storey stone mansion custom built by Dion and Angelil in 2001 offers “tranquil water views” from most of the rooms, the Sotheby’s exclusive listing says. The Île Gagnon home features an elevator, gym, game room, valuted stone wine cellar, pool and pool house.

Buyers can create a helipad if they want another way of accessing the island, apart from the private gated bridge with security post.

The estate’s near $30 million price tag overtakes the $27 million TuLyons residence on Île Bizard - also listed by Sotheby’s - as the most expensive residential home for sale in Quebec.

Céline fans, however, please note: “The vendors’ personal effects are excluded from the sale,” the listing says.
